Abstract: A Consensus Conference sponsored by the Archstone Foundation of Long Beach, California, was held February 17–18, 2009, in Pasadena, California. The Conference was based on the belief that spiritual care is a fundamental component of quality palliative care. This document and the conference recommendations it includes builds upon prior literature, the National Consensus Project Guidelines, and the National Quality Forum Preferred Practices and Conference proceedings.
Palliative Care Hotline Launched in Califonia
The Institute for Palliative Medicine has launched the Palliative Care Hotline to give communities in California lacking palliative medicine resources the opportunity to receive quality palliative care consultative and educational support. The toll free number for “PAL-MED” is 877-PAL-MED4.

Parnters For Children Waiver Lauched
California has entered into a formal agreement with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to pilot the children’s hospice and a palliative care waiver program in 13 counties over the next three years. It is anticipated that first five counties – Alameda, Monterey, San Diego, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz – will begin providing services under the program by the end of the year. The Partners for Children waiver will allow eligible children to receive concurrent curative and palliative care. Nursing Home Residents and Hospice
A study from Harvard Medical School found that hospice care in nursing homes provides benefits for the residents. These include higher quality end-of-life care, reduced hospitalizations, and improved pain management. Hospice care in nursing homes was also found to have positive effects on non-hospice residents, indicating indirect benefits on nursing home clinical practices.

Revised Consumer Brochure and FAQs
A revised brochure designed to introduce POLST to consumers is now available in PDF format at www.caPOLST.org. Also available on the website are updated Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for consumers and providers.
New Sources for Printed POLST Forms
POLST forms are now available for purchase from MED-PASS. The forms come pre-printed on Pulsar Pink card stock, and are available in tablets of 100 forms. The California Medical Association has developed a POLST Kit for purchase which includes a POLST form, wallet card and Frequently Asked Questions.
