Quality Improvement Project
Adequacy of Dialysis
(2000-2001)
ESRD Network 18
ABSTRACT
A dialysis adequacy quality improvement project
focusing on dialysis prescription elements was completed in 2001. Two equally matched groups of low-performing
facilities were separated into intervention and control groups, and
randomly-drawn individual patients were monitored over a 4-month period. Within and between group analyses showed no
significant difference in many of the hemodialysis adequacy process and outcome
indicators; however, the intervention group had greater improvements in
percentage of patients with URR >.65 and higher treatment times and
blood flow rates than the control group.
By the end of the project 60% of the intervention facilities had met the
improvement goal (>80% of patients in facility with URR >.65),
while only 30% of the control facilities met the goal.
