Quality Improvement Project
Improved Hepatitis B Vaccination Rates In ESRD Patients
(1996-1998)
ESRD Network 18
ABSTRACT
In 1994, California had the lowest patient HBV
vaccination rate in the country, and several HBV outbreaks occurred in the
state. Both ESRD Networks began a
formal QIP on improving Hepatitis B vaccination rates in the state. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) survey
of dialysis-associated diseases was used as a baseline and re-measurement tool.
Interventions included formal Medical Review Board standard on vaccination, a
Hepatitis booklet/resource guide was developed for all facilities, and
individual facility profiles and feedback reports. Within 2 years, the patient vaccination rate increased from 18%
to 53%, and facilities reporting “0% vaccination” dropped from 136 facilities
to 10 (statewide). A combination of
educational materials, formal requirements and feedback reports developed by
both California Networks resulted in major improvements in the HBV vaccination
rate for ESRD patients.
